08:14 Transcend: 8Gb NAND flash chip prices to drop 45% this year amid Samsung’s MLC ramp - Digitimes

Digitimes reports leading Taiwan memory module maker Transcend Information predicts that the price of NAND flash will drop dramatically amid an anticipated mass increase in supply from Samsung Electronics, according to company chairman Peter Su. Su also predicted that 8Gbit flash chip prices should edge below US$20 by the end of this year. Under an expected MLC flash production ramp-up from Samsung, together with growing output from Hynix Semiconductor and Micron Technology (MU), Su predicted that the sector will see oversupply this year. Su estimates that Samsung will start releasing considerable amounts of NAND flash to the spot market in the second quarter, as its MLC-made flash chips should reach mass production by then. Su explained that with consumer electronics driving NAND flash demand, the market will see more volatile pricing than is seen in the DRAM market, which is driven by PC applications.
