MOSCOW, January 19 (RIA Novosti) - Electricity demand hit a new record high Thursday evening Moscow time, as the exceptionally cold weather showed no sign of releasing its hold on the city.

Demand reached about 16,000 megawatts at 6pm Moscow time (3pm GMT), Moscow deputy mayor and municipal services head Pyotr Aksyonov said. Peak demand Wednesday evening, at the same time, was 15,760 MW, itself a record.

Moscow continued to operate as normal in spite of the conditions, Aksyonov said. There had been no power cuts to residential buildings or schools, and small, localized supply problems had not had an effect on the supply of hot water, he said.
