Well, lets walk through it. Why worry?
1. The presidential order was illegal, undermining the rule of law and the Constitution and the nation's core values.
2. The flooding of investigative agencies with superfluous illegal tips, all of which had to be checked, diverted manpower and resources from real investigative work.
3. Since the story has just started to unfold, it is not yet possible to say who actually was subjected to surveillance. COINTELPRO involved thousands.
4. Surveillance information can be misused in all kinds of ways, particularly when it is obtained illegally. Ask Coretta Scott King.
5. This episode is yet another instance of executive overreaching and very disturbing evidence of the severe erosion of checks and balances in the government.
6. Any journalist working in this country should be worried about who is listening to conversations that may involve sensitive sources.
7. Any activist political group, any Muslim civil rights worker, any human rights activist should be concerned that the US government is listening in on phone calls and reading emails.
8. This government does not have the greatest track record in identifying and capturing real bad guys even when it does have the information beforehand. (Otherwise the country would not be in the situation its in now.) Nor does it have a particularly good track record honoring the rights of political dissidents and critics.
9. Surveillance programs are NEVER rolled back unless the rollback is forced. Surveillance ALWAYS extends its reach to new territory. Always.
10. Who has nothing to hide?
