MM,

I like VAR for its valuation and consistency. It also seems to be not well followed by the investment community. This is interesting to me because it's one of the oldest technology company. I guess the company has so many product lines, it's hard to figure out what really contributes to the bottom line. Back in my physics graduate school days, we used a lot of their instruments and I knew they employed some good physicists. But VAR came to my attention as an investment opportunity only a couple of months ago, when I felt it's not easy to find cheap stocks anymore. I have been invested heavily in semiconductor/equipment companies. My thought was that if VAR was a pure semiconductor equipment company (in fact, only 1/3 of the company is), then it would be greatly undervalued. So I started to look at other two sectors of VAR: the instrument and medical equipment. The growth rate of instrument sector is pretty good. Medical sector equipment seems to be under some pricing pressure, but the company has been quite innovative with new technologies in this area, which should lead to better products with good profit margins. Overall, IMHO, the company is somewhat underestimated. I'm interested to hear your view.
