There is a lot of mythology in al quaeda claims. Many experts were quite glum post-9/11 expecting escalation of attacks particularly in the US. Actually their successes are in areas where they have local supporters--moroccans in spain, south asians in britain. In the US most of the palestinians are christian and most of the moslems here are not radical at all and then of course there is the american dream which is open to all and taken advantage of by many moslems. Europe is a bit different.
