11:54 EST Friday, Jan 20, 2006

HOUSTON -(Dow Jones)- The U.S. Coast Guard hopes to open up the Sabine- Neches waterway near Port Arthur, Texas, to ship traffic sometime Saturday, a spokesman said Friday.

As of Friday morning, the Coast Guard had removed more than 61 of the 94 concrete pilings that a cargo barge dropped in the ship channel Tuesday.

"We hope to open up the ship channel sometime tomorrow if things go well," said Coast Guard spokesman Adam Wine.

18 ships were affected by the interruption, including seven oil tankers destined to the area's refineries, the Coast Guard said.
