My measure of "an unreasonable amount" doesn't rely on comparisons to other countries. And its not just the overall level of taxes paid, but also the complexity and all the "bells whistles, toys, freebies, and scams". I think if we could remove most of them it would be enormously beneficial to the country.

I am much more concerned about the spending side of government

I share that concern. Spending has to be paid for. If it is borrowed there is an interest cost, and also there is the immediate effect of the demand for borrowed money for the government reducing the available supply for the private sector. You can't get a sustained tax reduction without at least restraint on spending growth. I would prefer to go beyond that and see actual cuts, but at a minimum we can't keep increasing spending at the rate that we have over the past few years.
