Update on Sprint/Samsung A900 EVDO phone

Hi again,

About a month ago I wrote about the new "Blade" phone from Samsung and Sprint that I gave myself for Xmas. At the time I was more than a little negative with my first impressions. I think I need to amend that.

The gist of what I said was that though the phone came with lots of goodies, the setup process was more than a little frustrating, mostly because downloading the software necessary to get the included USB cable to work failed four times. I still think that Sprint could do a much better job in providing the software. But the phone does work and rather spectacularly at times.

I am currently writing this from my laptop via a Bluetooth connection that I finally figured out tonight. The phone is across the room charging. As I see it, this may be the biggest advantage of BT in that I can use the phone as a modem for extended amounts of time without depleting the charge. That's a long way of saying that the recharge connnection and the USB connection are the same and the phone doesn't recharge while connected to a laptop.

In any case, I am now quite pleased with its performance since its coming close to what I imagined HDR might be like back in 1999.

The best aspect of the phone is that not one call has been dropped since I bought it which was the principal reason that I was in the market for a new phone in the first place. The sound quality is good using the the phone normally and excellent with the included headset. The display is quite good and even reasonable in sunlight. The camera has been useful (though not of terribly high quality) in a couple of instances and transfer of pictures to and from my laptop is now seamless.

The disappointments include somewhat limited battery life even with little data usage, the spotiness of the EVDO coverage(I'm writing in my home using 1x but out on the patio I can get EVDO) and Sprint's customer service reponse. Did you know that if you submit more than one email a day to their reps the second one always bounces even if its about a different service issue? And when you do get a response it will be from someone in India on possibly the worst quality connection I have ever heard.

As a caveat, I have not yet seen a bill but if the sales pitch was correct, I may well be able to use the service as a replacement for both my landline and my current ISP at a considerable savings.

I hope this is of some use.

Cheers, ku
