"Why do they earn royalties, Raymond"
Not because they fixed anything. When the WCDMA standard was created they included inventions from QCOM as well as from other companies that's why QCOM get royalties. After that some of their newer IPRs has also been implemented in the development of the standrd i suppose. But it was nothing basically wrong with the WCDMA standard from the beginning which was fixed by QCOM.All cellular and technical standards builds on earlier versions. When QCOM came with their CDMA standard they also built it on earlier inventions.Just because you have IPRs and therefor can earn royalties doesn't mean that you are important in a standard development. It's interesting to follow the TD-SCDMA debate where everybody on this thread seems to think that that is CDMA also and QCOM is behind it and have the right to collect a lot of money on the standard.Siemens,Nokia and Ericsson have a lot of more IPRs in the area but as always they keep a lower profile.
