Download the Operaminibrowser and you can go anywhere on the web at 600 mbit EVDO speeds compliments of CDMA. Just a fixed fee of $15 for Powervision. $5 extra for live TV. Operaminibrowser is indeed highly recommended (even without DO) and would probably work fine on Lars' Cingular/AT&T phone, although data rates still apply. The term "walled garden" certainly would apply to carriers that do not support J2ME, such as Verizon. As a consumer, I have vowed to never own a BREW phone, on the priciple that it enables customer hostile walled garden approaches. Certainly, BREW has benefits to carriers and their developer partners, but there's no reason customers should stand for it.
