You dig gold out of the ground, then put it right back in the ground in a vault - like keynes said about printing money and putting it in a jar and burying it in the ground and digging it back up when we need more supply - same difference - why even dig it out of the ground - we have all this new technology and satellite and such - just identify the GOLD - and say ok our supply has went up - why dig it out of the ground to put it right back in the ground? The problem with gold - when we have identified all we can find - and we need to increase the or decrease the money supply - how do we do that exactly?
