Nevada Gold From Robert Romano,
Its not just the "Silver State". 'Nevada is one of the Earth's premier gold producing regions, accounting for approximately 64 percent of the U.S. and nine percent of the world total' (production), according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. That's a surprising statistic, considering that Nevada is nicknamed "The Silver State", and California is supposed to be more closely associated with gold production. The same source goes on to point out, 'The impact of these mines on nearby economies and on our national balance of payments is profound, and will continue well into the next century.' (21st)
Nevada is the third-largest producer of gold in the entire world. It produced 7.73 million ounces in 2002, and only Australia, 9 million ounces and South Africa, 12.7 million ounces produced more. Nevada produced five percent less gold than it did in 2001, but remained the number on gold producing state of the country.
Since we are in a present day 'gold rush', of sorts, since the late 1980s, the Nevada Commission on Mineral Resources warns against offers of scam investments related to the gold mining industry.

At the end of 2002, Nevada 64 million troy ounces of gold reserves in or near current mines. That of course, can be higher or lower depending on what is nined during a year and what new gold discoveries are made. In example, in that year, although 7.7 million ounces were mined, only 3 million ounces were part of the gold reserve estimate. Small wonder, that prospecting is a weekend hobby of many residents and visitors.
The Carlin gold discovery of 1962 was a major event in mining Nevada gold. The present day 'Carlin trend' in Eureka County contains about twenty mines and is a major gold producing region of the world.
By the way, Nevada is still the number one silver producer of the United States, but that's another story.
