Senator 'paid girl to hush scandal'
Senator Ted Kennedy has a secret love-child, it was claimed yesterday.
The senator from Massachusetts, now 73, begged lover Caroline Bilodeau to have an abortion, then paid her around $15,000 to keep quiet when she refused.
One-time playboy Mr Kennedy - involved in a fatal car crash at Chappaquiddick in the 60s - had just split from wife Joan and feared news of the baby boy would finally sink his career.
A friend of Caroline's revealed: "He told her he couldn't undergo another scandal, not after Chappaquiddick, not so close to his divorce. He was angry when she defied him."
After the boy, Christopher, was born 21 years ago, the politician - brother of assassinated John F Kennedy - took a paternity test.
Friends and relatives grew suspicious when jobless Caroline, barely half Mr Kennedy's age, later bought a flash car and and moved into her own flat.
The source added: "We learned she received about $15,000 from someone in the Kennedy camp."
A Kennedy clan insider admitted: "This is one of the biggest secrets in the family and known to only a few people, including Ted's ex-wife Joan.
"He kept a lid on this for 21' years. He'll be devastated it's been told and worried about the damage it could cause politically."'
The Democrat senator met brunette Caroline in 1983, when he was 51. He had recently divorced Joan, mum of three of his children. He dumped his lover after she fell pregnant in 1984 and stayed away when she gave birth in December.
Caroline, of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, later married and her husband adopted her son.
Her friend said: "She's always been very protective of Christopher and wanted him to have a normal life." Insiders say he is now "mature enough to make his own choices about his background and biological father".
Mr Kennedy was hit by scandal in July 1969, when he crashed off a bridge in Chappaquiddick, Massachusetts and fled, leaving passenger Mary Jo Kopechne to drown.
The politician, who did not have a valid licence, waited nearly 10 hours to report it. He received a suspended jail term and it wrecked his 1972 White House dreams.
The Kennedys, the US's leading Catholic family, has long been dogged by controversy and bad luck.
Mr Kennedy's first wife Joan was held four times for drinkdriving. His sister Kathleen died in a jet crash, pilot brother Joe was killed in the Second World War and other brother Robert was assassinated in 1968.
Nephew David died of an overdose in 1984, nephew Michael in a 1997 ski tragedy and nephew John F Kennedy Jr in a 1999 plane crash. Last night the senator's spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner branded the love-child claims "irresponsible fiction".
