How did Japan do it?

They had the rest of the world booming, sucking their exports and supporting them in the process. Secondly, BOJ never allowed liquidation of bad loans. They are still on banks books. They will resurface again when the rest of the world goes into recession and exports won't be there to prop the Japanese economy.

OK since US consumer debt here is much grater we should have greater pain. Or perhaps it play out over a longer timeframe (ugh). Perhaps a huge portion of discretionary spending dies.

Why does everybody assume that US will be in depression by itself?. Don't we have globalization? Therefore we will have a global depression. It is like interconnected vessels. We all rode the mania up, now are going to slide together until we hit the bottom, wherever it might be.
