China is also building the next generation pebble bed fission nuclear reactor. This technology has been researched for decades, but no one has built a commercial version yet. The big advantages of pebble bed fission nuclear reactors is that they are inherently much safer than the water cooled reactors of today, because they rely on engineering controls that prevent overheating and China syndrome meltdowns. Also they are more efficient at generating electricity, because they use an inert gas like helium to run an electric turbine, instead of the current method of heating water to create steam (which is inefficient). The 500 MW Chinese pebble bed fission nuclear reactor is expected to be online by 2010 at a cost of about $500 Million (about the same cost as a modest sized coal plant).

China needs energy desperately. Necessity is the mother of all invention.
