It seems to me that the news Sept. 16 of Legato's high-end solution for providing backup and recovery of large Windows NT Server installations is good news for Ampex. Legato recently demonstrated the world's fastest Windows NT Server backup running on an Intel platform of over 200 GB/hour.

John Hennessey, director of Business Development at Ampex Corporation was quoted as stating ``We've worked closely with Legato to ensure the combination of NetWorker Power Edition for Windows NT Server and Ampex DST tape storage systems provides the industry's fastest and most CPU-efficient backup solution for mission-critical Microsoft SQL Server applications, with benchmark performance in excess of 200 GB/hour utilizing a four drive DST 812 12.8 TB data library.''

Now right now, there aren't that many companies running high end NT Servers like this, but my money is on Microsoft and Intel taking an ever increasing share of what is currently the UNIX market. I see this trend already in SAP installations. These installations are going to need back up and recovery - perhaps using Ampex tape drives.

Seems like a good story to me.
