My view of Iraq is simpler:

1) Saddam was actively plotting with Zarqwari to kill Americans and had training bases in northern iraq that had to be eliminated.

2) Chemical Ali was plotting to kill us in other more sinister ways.

3) the US needed a forward base to deal with the percolating Iranian nuclear threat.

With these things accomplished, the US need now only maintain their bases, continue to build Iraqi army and national guard, and then shift the focus to Syria and Iran and Hezbollah, and not necessarily in that order,
