Oh, goodness, no we haven't! I was referring to the recent environment, not that of thirty five years ago. I am much older than you, and have probably inhaled a lot more smoke! I waitressed in grad school, and shared offices with smokers in the 70s, and it was dreadful-everyone smoked back then! That was before no smoking sections, or the bans in office buildings and before the anti-smoking campaigns started and people became health-conscious-- and far more considerate under the pressure.
It's a whole new smoking world out there today, but a lot of it was accomplished by the power of the public- and I would prefer it happen that way. Today, the danger from second-hand smoke in a restaurant is minimal and I can live (literally) with it. I am a lot less in favor of governnment intervention in things than you are, though, so it makes sense we have different POVs.
