A case can be made that we would have ended up the same if we had stayed out of ME politics. I see the money we have spent there as a defense expense during the cold war. Plus a defense of Israel.

And the last 15 years? If we are spending several hundred billion dollars to defend Israel, I want my money back. After the cold war was over we stopped propping up corrupt regimes all over the world, but we couldnt stop in the ME.

There are always going to be some external costs that arent captured by free markets (government build highways for commerce or pollution's impact on health) but the price of oil in particular has had a HUGE subisidy that never shows up at the pump.

Reducing the economic impact of oil opens up whole new strategic options. What would Iran do if we began a blockade? That's never going to happen the way our economy reacts to a jump in the price of oil.
