BSNL gives 30% of GSM lines to ITI
New Delhi: Telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) today said 30 per cent of its GSM lines will be reserved for the public sector ITI under the reserved quota policy of the government.

Recently, the state-owned BSNL had expressed its interest in expanding its GSM base in the country and had floated mega tenders for 60 million GSM lines.

Out of this 60 million, only 42 million will be available for BSNL's actual expansion, sources in BSNL said.

Earlier, the tender was for adding 60 million lines with an investment of about 4.5 billion dollars. But taking out the Reserved Quota, BSNL would only be inviting bids for the rest of the quantity.

Now the balance 42 million lines would be for expansion into North, South and East while the contract for Western region would be awarded to ITI.

BSNL would lay 20 million lines across the country for 2006-07 of which 80 per cent would be mobile. The telecom operator in the country, which offers services all over except the cities of Delhi and Mumbai would also aim at covering 14,000 villages with one telephone in each village over the next two years.

The investment would come from internal accruals of BSNL but the corporation may also resort to borrowing of Rs 5,000-6,000 crore from the market.
