re: When the Iranian president is on the record saying that the Holocaust never happened and Israel should be wiped off the map, do you think he should be entrusted with a nuke? And if everyone who has a nuke is basically a hypocrite, then who's responsible for making sure Iran doesn't get one?

This is not a new issue... it WAS the cold war. The fear of USSR nukes was much more palpable, much more immediate (we used to have nuke drills hiding in our basements). And the USSR was seen as even more evil and dangerous than the current Iran/terrorist, much more.

Of course the "solution" was mutual deterrence. If Iran gets a nuke, or a dozen nukes, they will be defensive. If they ever used them, everyone in Iraq would be dead, the country would be uninhabitable for 100 years.

Not a perfect solution... as we get more countries with nukes then the odds of a mistake or a crazy decision multiply. Pakistan - India - Russia - China - Britain - France - US - North Korea(?) - <edit> missed Israel.

So what do you do? It's obvious the US doesn't have the clout or the funds or the people to police the world. The UN or some other world government with enforcement power? We would have to give up some souvernty to make it effective.

Blowing the crap out of Iran might be a short term, country specific solution to a long term problem... but it's not the end of the problem. And would most likely precipitate a world wide recession.

You tell me... whats the solution?
