While US federal policy has avoided strong initiatives internationally, US states have taken a different approach.

The California Public Utilities Commission has finally approved the USD 2.9bn California Solar Initiative,

to encourage the installation of 3.0GW of solar capacity in the next 11 years through a series of rebate incentives.

These will be available initially to photovoltaic installations, and will be extended to solar water heating and thermal technology later in 2006.

One solar company which is likely to benefit from the California Solar Initiative is AIM-listed,

California-based Solar Integrated Technologies, which installs flat-roof solar panels using thin-film solar cells

purchased from United Solar Ovonics. Solar Integrated has just announced a USD 2.5m contract with Honeywell

Building Solutions, an efficiency service company, for a 375kW photovoltaic installation on the roof of the Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.
