The study missed an important dimension by not testing to see if partisans would turn on their own officeholders when their partisan agenda wasn't pushed strongly enough. So they didn't ask the question that fits the situation you pose. Their test was slanted toward supporting their own guy even if he proved to have a position that was not viable, or visibly failing, or flip-flopping. It would be an interesting issue to poll - ideological dedication over personal loyalty - and to do the MRI study on.
