The article told me that once entrenched in your belief about a candidate, you will not or cannot change your view.

If your take is an accurate representation of what the article says than I think the article made far too strong of claim. I do think that once you have your candidate (or your favorite TV shows, or your soap, or your anything) there can be some reluctance to change. It might be stronger in terms of party or candidate preference than it is with soap I don't know. But certainly people can and do change.

Personally my opinion about a candidate changes easier than my vote. That's because your vote isn't "is this guy great", but rather "do you want this politician or the other politician to win". If I rate Candidate A 7 out of 10, and than later change my opinion to 4 out of 10, I might still vote for him if I'd give Candidate B 2 out of 10.
