WebTV Unveils Second-Generation Service

WebTV Networks Inc. today will roll out a second generation of its
television-based Internet access service that allows users to view
television programming and the Web at the same time.

The Microsoft Corp. subsidiary said it will offer a system dubbed Web TV
Plus that integrates a cable-ready TV tuner and a 1.1 gigabyte hard
drive into its set-top box, providing Internet access via the
television.

The equipment, priced at less than $300 and slated to be available in
the fall, offers a picture-in-picture display of the Web and TV
programming even on standard television sets.

The product introduction marks Microsoft's latest bid at building a
business in the interactive television field. In theory, programmers
will be able to publish Web sites designed to augment their television
shows and to be viewed simultaneously on the WebTV system.

In addition, Microsoft could download video programming for later
viewing, possibly cutting broadcasters and cable network operators out
of revenue that could someday be generated by interactive television
services.

WebTV also said it will price its standard Web TV system, which provides
only Internet access, at less than $200 with a $100 rebate. Users must
pay monthly fees of $19.95 for unlimited access to the WebTV network.
