"As for killing them, I'm speaking in a war context and see nothing wrong with air strikes against their locations."

Ah! You want to target terrorist encampments (in Syria, Lebanon, etc.) and their associated military training facilities... NOT the nurses/doctors/social workers that they field inside the Palestinian refugee camps (that *is*, of course, the source of their growing political influence. That, and the fact that Fatah is so TOTALLY, perhaps irredeamably, CORRUPT that the Palestinians are willing to turn to ANY other political Party....)

"As for elections, Hamas has no more credibility fielding political candidates under their banner than al-Qaeda."

If you ban candidates from contesting elections (like Egypt did and does!) then it AIN'T DEMOCRACY. (Banning candidates would expose as hypocrites any who mouth platitudes about the wonders of 'Democracy'... but who fear to allow it).

As far as al Qaeda, it would be *very interesting* to see how they would poll in Saudi Arabia.
