UPDATE 1-Peabody Energy fourth-quarter profit soars
Thu Jan 26, 2006 08:55 AM ET
(Adds details)

NEW YORK, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Coal miner Peabody Energy (BTU.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday said fourth-quarter profit more than doubled as coal sales rose and production hit records, though it forecast first-quarter earnings well below expectations on higher costs and lower production.

The company posted a net profit of $162.2 million, or $1.21 per share, compared with a year-earlier net profit $67.9 million, or 51 cents per share. Sales rose to $1.23 billion from $1.02 billion a year earlier.

Analysts polled by Reuters Estimates on average expected earnings per share of $1.05 on revenue of $1.22 billion.

For the first quarter the company forecast earnings per share of 60 cents to 90 cents, based on lower production and higher costs for fuel, explosives, health care and mine operations. Analysts expected $1.03.

The company forecast 2006 earnings per share of $3.75 to $4.85, as it said railroads will only be able to accommodate about half of the increased customer demand for coal from the Powder River Basin. Analysts expected earnings per share of $4.45 for 2006.
