Matsushita Electric Industrial {6752} will begin exporting DVD players for the Chinese market. The company has been exporting for markets in Europe and the United States as well as countries in Southeast Asia, including Singapore and Malaysia. It is, however, the first time the company has exported to China. Matsushita expects to ship approximately 100,000 units in the first year. The company began full-fledged efforts this summer, exporting to China through Hong Kong. Only a limited amount of DVD software is on the market in China but the units can play video CDs. Video CDs for karaoke are about 200 to 300 yen apiece; movies are 700 to 800 yen. With such low prices, demand for DVD players is expected to be high. Matsushita began marketing DVD players in Japan last November. Thereafter, the company began exporting to Europe and the United States and then to Southeast Asia. Matsushita plans to sell a total of 200,000 units this year in Southeast Asia and China.
