You really can't ignore GM's $98B benefit liabilities when you are discussing business. I think you realize that too.

GM's health liabilities may well be worse than Toyota's. I thought you posted in the past what Toyota pays. But what does that have to do with why GM can't build quality cars; why their designs look dated even when they revamp the look of a car or why they continued to build SUVs hand over fist as oil went from $30 to $70 per barrel? Ford deals with the same unions and has the same health liabilies. Why are they profitable?

You implied Toyota has an older work force because of retension, yet you didn't realize that GM's worker is nearly an entire decade older than Toyota.

I never implied anything of the sort.....it may have been in an article I posted but I never said it.

Meanwhile, Toyota can get rid of older workers without the media thinking a thing because they've got that media glow thus can do no evil. (Not saying they are doing this, but you have to ask yourself why Toyota struggles with retension of older workers, and why is their average worker ten years younger?) A lot of the older boomer Toyota engineers are beginning the process of retiring and thus are leaving a pretty large engineering gap. They are going to be losing a lot of experienced people. I think GM does a much better job with retension because their benefits are quite huge particularly for experienced workers.

I am sorry Amy but everything I have ever read indicates most Toyota employees have their jobs til they retire. While the Japanese concept of the long term, employment contract has changed somewhat in the past ten years, it stills plays a strong role in Japanese life. As for Toyota employees being younger, Toyota is growing and hiring new people all the time. GM is not.

I think GM has a lot of deadwood in its corporate office. I would clear that out before doing anything else. And its not just me that feels this way..........many investment pundits feel the same way about GM. Their problems are mostly company specific.
