What does Athens have to offer, in your opinion? Been spending much time there over the past several decades (yes, decades, not years), and becoming less enchanted with it every time.
Had lunch not too long back in that town with two longtime friends who grew up in Athens, have no need to make money anymore, have personal wealth earned on their own and through inheritance and through professional involvement in the stock brokerage biz with major firms in Atlanta. Their opinions on the future of Athens are pretty negative.
What, exactly, makes you think Athens is a great place to live? Extreme liberal politics are driving out business, no builder or developer wants to deal anymore with the local government red tape, civic leaders have forgotten that healthy businesses make for more jobs and a prosperous local economy, and a big university (god love them DAWGS, however) is generating way too much liberal political thought for the town's own good.
Compare Athens, GA, to a smalltown place like Greenville, NC, and I see a better-looking town in NC. Not as shabby or run down.
My personal observations only. Have decided I'll choose a suburb of Atlanta over Athens any day of the week as a place to live. And North Carolina (where I spent the first half of my college career) looks pretty good, too, in some spots. |
