Horizon Organic to help boost N.Y. dairy farmers
Business Journals

Horizon Organic, in conjunction with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., on Friday announced an initiative to help New York dairy farmers change to organic production.

Founded in 1991, Broomfield-based Horizon Organic is the U.S.'s first certified organic dairy. Horizon created the Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) Program to promote the company's belief that producing products without the use of pesticides, antibiotics or growth hormones improves the environment.

The HOPE Program is working with 79 New York farmers as they transition to organic farming by providing technical assistance, on-site visits to help with the organic certification process, and financial support that will allow farmers to purchase the more expensive feeds and convert their farms to meet organic standards.

The HOPE Program includes a $5 million investment to expand Steuben Foods in Elma, N.Y., plus an estimated $35 million in donations to local processing plants, testing facilities, dairy cooperatives and retailers.

Horizon has more than 300 farming partners nationwide, with more than one-third of them in New York. The company estimated an additional 30 million pounds of milk will be needed in the next year to meet the region's demand.
