The curriculum has changed a lot then. I don't often find adults who can really talk about comparative politics or political philosophy unless they went out of their way to study them at the college level.

So they are easy to dupe with sloppy accusations of what is "far right" and "far left" and all the buzzwords - communist, socialist, fascist, etc. - that go with them.

The fact that we fought real fascists in WW2 and communists in the Cold War makes the cartoon character approach to "political science" that much easier to sell.

If I had to place some real blame, I wouldn't start with the schools as much as the hate-talk media industry that has sprung up the last 20-25 years. There are no standards for intellectual integrity there (just ratings) and people hear many more hours of twisted spin from that than they ever spent with a high school or college poli sci instructor.
