"Open-mindedness is vastly overrated; ...it mean[s] you never cared very strongly about anything that ever happened to you."

--Gary Sitton, late Editor of Petersen's Hunting Magazine.

I found Sitton's point to resonate with my own experience. When I was half as old as I am now, I prided myself on open-mindedness. I strove to see the positive aspects every point of view. I could argue one point against another because I held neither.

As I grew in age and wisdom, I came to realize that equivocation on issues confuses people. They can't tell where you stand, if anywhere. They don't trust your arguments because you seem to be all over the map.

I learned that if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. Mostly your own views are correct as the issues affect you. Nobody else will look out for your point of view, so you have to do it yourself.
