Fischer: Hamas election victory won’t shake Israeli economy

The governor of the Bank of Israel was speaking at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.

IDF Radio (Galai Zahal) quotes Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer as saying that he does not think that Hamas’s victory in the Palestinian elections will shake Israel’s economy. “Although the economy could grow more rapidly if there were peace talks, a brief delay in the peace process will not cause bleak economic conditions,” said Fischer at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.
This is not the first time that Fischer has spoken in this vein. At the Sixth Herzliya Conference on the Balance of Israel's National Security last week, he said Israel’s economy was at a crossroads: a state of calm and expectations of a peace process would have a positive influence on Israel's economy; on the other hand, an escalation of the dispute with the Palestinian Authority was liable to cost Israel dearly.

In his speech at the Herzliya Conference Fischer said, "As far as the security situation is concerned, it is clear that a state of calm, and specifically expectations of a peace process, have a positive influence on Israel's economy and thus constitute a very important factor. This is expressed in particular via tourism and domestic and foreign investors' willingness to invest in Israel.”
