Dell has tapped US equipment manufacturer Novatel Wireless to supply Wireless EV-DO and HSDPA mobile broadband embedded modules to be incorporated in its next-generation notebook computers.

Dell this week said it would include Novatel’s 3G modems in its forthcoming Latitude notebook computers, allowing Dell's mobile customers to wirelessly send and receive emails, surf the internet, download file attachments and access corporate networks through a VPN.

Notebooks featuring an embedded HSDPA chipset will be made available as a made to order option for customers in Europe and the US, while EV-DO-enabled computers will be targeted at the US and Asia. In addition, the embedded modules are backward compatible with 2.5G and 2G standards, including GSM, GPRS, CDMA and 1x RTT, where 3G networks are not available.

Earlier this week Dell revealed that the European devices will be interoperable with current 3G services offered by Vodafone.

Dell expects the first notebooks to be available in the first half of this year.
