The U.S. military on Thursday freed five of what it said were 11 women among the 14,000 detainees currently held in the 2 1/2-year-old insurgency. All were accused of "aiding terrorists or planting explosives," but an Iraqi government commission found that evidence was lacking. One of the changing strategies for insurgent leadership is for them to use their wives, or other women, to carry out sensitive tasks, or to store their cell phones. On many raids by our forces it has been discovered that the women were hiding incriminating evidence on their person, including cell phones and fake ID cards. The woman, who's capture raised an outcry in Fallujah back last fall, was rumoured to have been connected directly to Zarqawi. Some even believed she may have been one of his wives. But overall, from my experience, it was not US policy to detain females during a raid unless they had fairly strong evidence of being an willing accomplice. However, some of that evidence might be classified so it doesn't get passed on for indictment and conviction. Hawk
