Would it follow that we should abolish speed limits and just impose all the costs of an accident on the responsible party?

It is the job of the government to protect us from others. Ergo we need speed limits.

Cost is not a factor when there is a victim of someone else. Cost compensation may not help you when you've been the victim of a speeder. If you're the only car on the road and are alone in it or with a consenting adult, speed all you like.
