I tried Kerio for the same reason. My desktop had been very slow to boot and ZA didn't come up in the system tray for a long time. When I bought a notebook, I installed Kerio instead of ZA.

Long story short: The notebook has been happily running ZA for months after giving up on Kerio after a few weeks. I just couldn't get the hang of Kerio. Too many alerts. After you approve a program to access whatever, it continues to alert you for any process called by the approved program. There must be a way to stop this, but I just got worn out by always having to deal with the firewall. I didn't find it to be easy to change configurations.

I know many consider Kerio top notch, and I don't doubt them. But I didn't have the patience for it.

BTW, the slow boot on the desktop was fixed by reinstalling XP. I try to avoid that at all costs, since it takes many hours-days to get my programs and settings back to the environment I like. I had to do it for a different reason, but the slow boot was fixed in the mix.

If you run Avast! antivirus, I believe it does a memory and system core virus check on boot up. A nice security feature, but the trade off is a slower boot time. I find that boot time is faster running AVG..
