I'm one of those who use images regularly. I restored an image, but XP thought the restored image was an illegal copy. Somehow it didn't match the record from the windows activation. I had repartitioned as well, which probably had something to do with it. I decided to cut my losses and start over before spending much time trying to puzzle out the activation issues.

The result has been a system I'm much happier with.
