With the recent UTEK announcement, let's talk micromachining. Now here is a lesson on how to extend a product's life cycle. Using old steppers for new uses. I am not sure if one should consider this a growth area within a declining market (older steppers) or if it should be considered a market in and of itself. Anyway, last year, micromachining made up 2% of UTEK revenues. At the begining of this year, UTEK thought this segment would consititute 4% but it looks as though it will be more like 8% or revenues. IR gave me this particular information. It is growing a good clip and should continue to do so though not as fast a rate as some other UTEK business segments.
Really, UTEK has no idea of the growth rate in my opinion. New applications are being developed and there is little way to accurately gauge what those new develpoments will be in the future HP, Analog Devices and International Rectifier are some of the customers. Micromachining is used mostly in automotive, consumer electronics and biomedical areas.Usually done above geometries of about one micron and involves older model steppers like the 1100s. A typical unit goes for for about $600K. There is a longer buying cycle involved with this area with many of UTEK customers being Mom and Pop shops that don't make a decision right away, but when they do they want their machine delivered yesterday.
