All of Vietnam was a huge mistake and lie. We were "kicking butt" by trying to blow the whole country into the stone age and kill every man, animal, tree and fish around. We dropped more ordnance than in the entire WWII on that poor country and droped all kinds of awful toxic chemicals on them too. Why oh why? We were never attacked. So why were we fighting? The LBJ-Nixon hawks claimed it was because we were stopping the Soviets and Chinese in Vietnam, but 20 years later McNamara admitted that it was all wrong, all a lie. Just a civil war we got between and escalated into a major conflict. Turns out the North Vietnamese hated the Soviets and CHinese. In fact in the late 70's, the VC fought a war against the CHinese, and the Soviets never moved into Vietnam.
