I went through the IRS bull a few months ago about our taxes from 2004. Seems we messed up on the withholding, transposed some numbers when entering them in Turbo Tax. They IRS send letters via the U.S. Postal service but the U.S. Postal service sent them to the people on the other street with almost the same name as our street but the same street number.

Anyway, when I finally got the notice, I called them, the guy on the phone was extremely nice and told me to look over my tax return to make sure there wasn't an error on their part and then, if there wasn't, pay the tax due, send in a letter explaining the problem with the missed notices and ask for relief from the penalties and interest. Well, yesterday, I got a certified letter from those bastards saying that it wasn't a good enough reason and I still owed the penalties and interest and oh, by the way, we tacked on some more interest for you taking so long.
