Perhaps I should keep the time references out of it.

Immortal assets cause distortions in the economy, and they have for a long time. There are fewer immortal assets now than there were in the past (such as the middle ages) but those that remain are just as damaging.

The greatest damage is that they lead to control by those who would do the least with them (they don't want to disrupt the status quo if they are on top and only have to be passive to remain there).
