re: As Brazil Fills Up on Ethanol,
It Weans Off Energy Imports

There are so many easy, low tech solutions. Small cars can be built to get 40-50 MPG on standard gas, hybrids, diesel that get great mileage, biodiesel fuel and as you noted ethanol and ethanol combinations.

It just takes some leadership and some method agnostic tax incentives/penalties for efficiency. The increased discretionary dollars from lower gas prices and lower consumption would be a boon to the economy, an effective "tax cut". And the political benefits.

It's the ultimate stupidity to remain so inefficient with a finite commodity that is the lifeblood of our economic lives, and is controlled by other unfriendly countries. "Oil supply risk" is 10 times the problem of "terrorist risk".
