Not that I am advocating the Canadian system, but it too has always allowed patients to choose physicians and the treatment facility as a matter of course.

The big problem, as with all other systems, is the exploding cost of health services, which are increasing at a far greater rate than CPI or even the GDP. Governments hate to forever increase taxes, and thus, in Canada, they are looking at some private healthcare involvement of some kind to take some load off the public medicare system. As far as I am concerned, you pay Peter or you pay Paul, or both.
