Were they oil company investors? A fantasy, but imagine if the country suddenly adopted an energy policy with real teeth... taxing inefficiency and providing tax credits for efficiency. Two things would happen overnight, a large portion of the risk premium would disappear from the price of oil, and energy stocks would tumble. If you are an oil bull that's not a good thing...


Actually, even if the US came up with the most stringent conservation plan in its history, oil prices would not change much. To make a difference, American consumption would have to drop significantly very quickly to move the price of crude........not likely under any conservation plan. However, it would help to stall any significant future increases.

But visionary planning in these not so united states seems to be out of style these days.
