It is reasonable to conclude that the fear of terrorism is an irrational fear, one that is fed by the media and government. 5,000 people on average, worldwide, die of terrorism each year. That might sounds scary, but when you compare it to other statistics it almost makes terrorism seem trivial.
For example: 5,000 Americans die on our highways each month, 10,000 Americans die from gun violence each year, an American's chances of dying from a presciption drug or a drive to their local mall are far higher statistically than from terrorism.
Yet, terrorism is what has people so worried. Talk about misplace fears and priorities. While people smoke and drink more to cope with their fear of terrorism they are shortening their lives, not to mention when they need more prescription drugs to cope or are not concentrating on the highways because they are worried about terrorism, they are putting their lives at risk.
I drive to/from work everyday on an Interstate. I can identify at least a half dozen serious safety hazzards that the feds could correct to make just this one highway much safer to drive, yet the federal money goes to Iraq to fight a phantom menance known as terrorism. |
