But if hundreds of millions of Americans try to buy drugs at current Canadian prices from Canada than both systems fall apart.

Of course it wont work, but I'm not sure we shouldnt want the rest of the worlds systems to fall apart. The US is currently subsidizing the world's drug R&D budget through its higher prices. The cost to US competitiveness is way to high for the system to continue forever. We will either need to adopt a system similar to the rest of the world, which will mean fewer new life saving drugs....or we need to pressure the other industrialized countries to get rid of their price controls.
