You're right! I don't know the business as a mortgage originator but I know some of the people in the biz and some of the analysts who follow it. My point is that their old way of buying these "teaser" loans and paying points in the hope of collecting future interest income has blown up in their face. That was the biggest component in their recent writedown. So THEY ARE CHANGING TO A NEW MODEL FOR THEM and therefore it is unproven, not to mention risky and very competitive.
