Should Denmark apologize for being a democracy instead of a theocracy in addition too?

The rights a democracy guarantees its citizens (and, incidentally, any collateral damage suffered by demigogues and dictators) does not include the right not to be offended.

I believe the US should back that paper to the hilt and tell the gov't of Denmark it made a mistake in apologizing. It has nothing to apologize for. If it muzzles its press, that is something to apologize for.

Perhaps the most important things to remember in this is that the paper that posted the cartoons is a right wing paper that has had a long history of anti-moslem articles and cartoons, that this newspaper was warned as to the consequences by Danish specialists in Islamic culture, and that the prime minister was warned of the possible consequences of not dealing with the growing situation in a letter written by 11 ambassadors asking for a meeting with the prime minister. A meeting which the prime minister rejected.

In any case those that got this boycott started used their right to present their case to the Arab world, distorted as that presentation might have been.

As to the comment by Lazarus that the ME has no right to dictate what should or should not be printed in western newspapers, well Denmark stands to lose 1.5 billion dollars in export business and that's why the Danish prime minister is trying to contain this situation that never should have gotten this far out of hand. He has had meetings with the ambassadors now and publicly disavowed the cartoons. He has also been on Arab TV to excuse the gross cartoons and to explain the Danish government's position.

SO?
The Danish gov'ts position should be that it is not involved weither in religionor in muzzling the press in Denmark. That $1.5B- -is democracy for sale?

It is also why there is a wide spread debate on freedom of speech in Denmark and its limitations.
Suppose its press offends me? Should the gov't be required to apologize and the press involved told to shut up?

Remember too that moslems in Denmark are subjected to the most severe immigration laws in Europe as well as having little access to the job market.
This excuses the gov'ts action in this matter?

The prime minister brought Denmark into the Iraq war and made Denmark into a war mongering nation. The high point in his foreign policy career was his breakfast with Bush.
Yeah. I'm sure the high point of the Danishmonarch was his interview with Herr Hitler afterthe German Army came marching in. They didn't get much chance to offend the Nazis after that.

Guess what? I don't know where YOU are, but we still have a free press here in the US, Bush or not. I pity you if you don't.
